To sing a note and manifest a pure harmonic overtone is akin to singing a vowel—a very strange vowel.
To sing a note and manifest a melody of harmonic overtones is akin to singing a word—a very strange word.
Anyone who wishes to sing can do it.
Some, of those who practice, can manifest a sound so pure and
resonant that many who hear it for the first time are spell-bound.
Though much diligent work has been done to promote music and
meditation practices through the study and manifestation of harmonic
overtones, there are still vast numbers of people who have never heard
of it.
Overtone Singing invites and maybe requires a unique kind of listening.
It is attractive to our curiosity for the essence of spirit.
A lot of people are doing it.
Singing with harmonic overtones can be astonishingly beautiful at times, and amazingly difficult to bear at others.
There are soft styles, strong styles, and harsh styles and each has a unique and full dynamic range.
Most styles feel good to the singer and bring about a state of tranquility, joy and even euphoria.
There are styles that are painful and dangerous to vocal
health, particularly sub-harmonic styles, in some cases, only if
vocalized incorrectly.
The phrase “Oh, it hurts at the beginning but you get used to it”, has a dubious ring to it.
For the sake of finding the deep places of the voice any form of overtone singing is worth a try.
Many of those who try and have some success with learning to
hear and to sing overtones are not quite sure where to expand to once
they achieve some ability with it.
There is not much notation out there on the web or in stores
or university shelves for overtone singers who would like to work from
a notated score; but that's what we're here for.
Thank You and keep posted!
